You may think that the origins of Soduku are Japanese, and while
the word originates from a Japanese phrase the game actually comes
from America.
Soduku was first published in the late 1970s in a magazine published
by Dell. Soduku was origianally called "number place"
in Dell Pencil and Word Games.
The name of the game comes from Japanese after the game was published
in the paper Monthly Nikolist in 1984. The puzzle's full name was
"Suuji wa dokushin ni kagiru" which means "number
is limited only single (unmarried)" however it was shortened
to Soduku.
